Lesson Plan on Angles using a Video By: Iris M. López-Algarín Lesson Plan (50 Minutes)
Angles
Objective: The students will get acquainted with the basic concepts related to angles and will estimate measurements of angles.
Language Objectives: The students will write about what they learn about angles and the practical use of knowing about angles. They will share with a partner and with the whole groups their thoughts on the practical use of angles. Vocabulary words will be posted.
Reference to Curriculum Goals and Corresponding Learner Outcome:
Goal 1.2: Develop understanding of basic vocabulary of geometry.
Goal 1.3: Use segments and angles to develop measurement skills.
Previous Knowledge: The students have already explored on basic vocabulary for angles using Three-Columns Format (Word, Definition, Own Words/Drawing). The basic vocabulary consists of: angle, sides and vertex of an angle, degree, congruent angles, protractor, compass. Other important word that the student has acquired previously is geometry (measure of the Earth).
Schema Activator (5minutes): By using the smart board the teacher shows from the Internet pictures of the Tower of Pisa in Italy. The teacher explains bout the inclination of the Tower of Pisa (mention the degrees in inclination) and how the Tower of Pisa is a landmark that attracts millions of tourists every year.
Explicit / Direct Teaching Strategies (10 minutes)
By using a Topic Organizer, the teacher will explain the student what they have already covered and what is going to come now. The teacher will use a big compass and a protractor to show how the angles are formed and classify by their measurements. The teacher will use the vocabulary words in context.
Practice Activity: (25 Minutes)
Students will go to the web site http://www.learn-with-math-games.com/geometry-game.html to explore about the measurements and classification of angles. See the Instructions Sheet for the students in the next page.
Assessment
The students will print out the screens of their work done from the web site/game.
Closure (10 minutes)
The students will do a Journal Entry related to what they learned and how they think it is important to learn about angles.
The teacher will ask the students to share with a partner their thoughts written in the Journal. Then the teacher will ask the students to share with the rest of the class.
